Upstairs Downstairs

20 Sided Records

Upstairs Downstairs started as friends and roommates who literally shared the “upstairs” and the “downstairs” portion of a San Francisco house. Premiering five years ago as the singer-songwriter-plus-help-from-friends project of Tory Ford, they have since released a gorgeous debut album – Inland Out (2010), and are now preparing to release a new self-titled full length via 20 Sided Records on October 1, 2013.

Since the release of their debut, Inland and Out, the band has solidified with Isaac Bonnell on keys and everything in-between, Dan Caporale on drums, Kyle McGraw on guitar, George Slavik on bass, and Lindsay Irving as the official not official contributor of vocals.

Upstairs Downstairs creates its own brand of dark melodic pop, crafting songs that celebrate and regret the mysterious, mundane, joyous, and occasionally lonely work of living and loving. In doing this the band incorporates an arsenal of musical and non-musical tools and influences such as: getting stuck in the snow, the National, the Carter Family, bumper-to-bumper traffic, Yo La Tengo, Rainer Maria, Explosions in the Sky, and awkward silences.

Independent and self-directed, the new self-titled album was recorded over the course of a few months  at Faultline Studios by engineer/producer Kyle McGraw. McGraw then mixed the album at Jackpot! Studios in Portland, Oregon.
