Nasimiyu Murumba
DIY dream-pop artist Nasimiyu brings her composer/arranger/producer/multi-instrumentalist zing to her new EP, “dirt.” The genre falls somewhere on the earthier, dirtier, brassy-er side of the indie pop spectrum.
Think Talking Heads plus Etta James — on a safari. Other influences include Sun Ra, Fiona Apple, Dirty Projectors, TV on the Radio, Bjork, and Fela Kuti.
Nasimiyu came up in a half-Kenyan, half-Scandinavian household in Minneapolis, then rounded out her sound studying under street performers, voodoo practitioners, and marching band musicians for 4 years in New Orleans. She now moves and shakes in eclectic artist circles in Brooklyn.
Nasimiyu worked on “dirt” across several timezones with co-producers Andreas Gustafsson in Sweden and Ben Lorio in New Orleans. They received glowing reviews from VOGUE, SPIN, NYLON, IMPOSE, Okay Africa, Afro-Punk, MAGNET, UTNE, and Interview magazines for the uniquely spirited sounds on “dirt.”
Although she played most of the instruments on the new album herself, Nasimiyu fronts and plays keys/percussion with a 4-piece live backing band of NYC musicians she describes as her “top picks.” With Attis Clopton on drums, Mark Nagy on sousaphone, Eden Baraket on bari sax, and Andrew McGovern on trumpet, the band has a pronounced dynamism that has garnered a lively new following.
