Crater

Crater is a Seattle-based electro-pop duo consisting of Ceci Gomez and Kessiah Gordon. After touring nationally on the back of a few singles, their debut full length album, Talk to Me so I Can Fall Asleep, was released in the winter of 2016 by Help Yourself Records. The band’s follow up, titled Unearth, which will be released on January 12th, 2018,  incorporates similar themes drawn from their first record but makes a deliberate shift in production; the songs touch on love, loss, and total disillusionment, but rather than hiding these ideas behind a cacophony of layered samples and synthesizers, Crater sheds itself of any unnecessary weight in hopes of being more direct. Unearth poises itself as a pop record while occasionally nodding at the duo’s more experimental cravings.

Reflecting on Unearth, the band writes, “we both had fallen out of love, were trying to identify the differences between loneliness and solitude, while simultaneously dealing with family illness, and then the election happened. It felt like an impossible situation, and unfortunately continues to feel this way with Trump still in office. While we kept thinking that it shouldn’t all have to be so heavy handed, we eventually conceded to the fact that we live in dark times and shouldn’t avoid reckoning with or writing about it. ”

Praise for Talk to Me so I Can Fall Asleep:

“Most of us have experienced the annoyance of dining with someone who won’t put down their phone, even as we’d rather be on our phones ourselves, but few musicians have captured that feeling of hypocritical frustration as acutely as Crater’s Ceci Gomez and Kessiah Gordon.” Pitchfork

“..dark and weird and really beautiful.” The FADER

“….a collection of industrial pop tracks that I can’t help but liken to stainless steel. These songs are polished and initially cold, but when you admire them from a certain angle, they absolutely glimmer.” Stereogum
