What We Do

Riot Act Media is a boutique publicity firm that expertly launches creative, communication-based campaigns for clients in the independent music, film and arts worlds—as well as for non-profit and corporate entities—through its office in Portland, OR.

But, what comprises a campaign, exactly? Well, that depends on the project. Riot Act offers a myriad of services that might be right for you—and every project is approached based on what you, the client, wants. If you want to hire us for a full long lead-time campaign on your record, we can do that. If you just want for us to write you a bio and send out one e-mail about your new single, we gots it. If you want to hire us for three years to send out a press release per week about your new balloon inflation business, we can make it happen. No job is too big or too small; it all depends on whether a) we can deliver what you need as it relates to our current workload, b) how well equipped we are to handle you as a client, and c) how much your band/book/film/business/festival is congruent with our company's vibe.

Developing and executing album campaigns for bands and musicians is the cornerstone of our business, and makes up the bulk of Riot Act's business affairs at any given time. From full national servicing to long lead-time contacts at glossy publications and in television to targeted, regionally-focused and/or online-centric campaigns, we can tweak any approach to fit your needs. See our "contact/FAQ" page for more information.

Whether it's part of an album campaign or on its own, we will do our best to get your tour dates the attention they deserve. Get in touch with Nathan Walker at Nathan (at) riotactmedia.com.

Back in the day (which, actually, was not very long ago), editorial coverage served as the primary vehicle through which to get the word out about your project. (Aside from radio, of course, which we don't handle—check out our pals at Spectre for that.) Now, sites with social networking capabilities like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Last.fm, YouTube, Vimeo and others serve a similar purpose, and you control the nature and frequency of the content, interact with existing fans and become visible to tons of potential new ones. A myriad of other editorially focused sites (i.e. prominent sites, blogs, the online components of major magazines or alt newsweeklies) constantly run contests and promotions that are not critical or inherently editorial in nature. Using online music marketing either on its own or as an addition to a pre-existing publicity campaign is a great idea! For more information, get in touch with Joan Hiller Depper at joan (at) riotactmedia dot com.

Owner/Publicity Director Joan Hiller Depper has written about a bazillion band, author, actor, corporate and creative bios in the past decade, having worked at Hopper PR and Sub Pop Records before acquiring Riot Act in 2007. She sleeps with an MLA handbook under her pillow and despises grammatical errors and misspellings. Her music, fashion and pop culture writing has been published in Venus (where she was once a copy editor), Alternative Press, Vice, RollingStone.com, UR Chicago, Newcity, Portland Mercury, The Stranger, Cleveland Free Times, Detroit Metro Times, Hit It or Quit It, Punk Planet and others. She also co-authored and co-edited several almanacs about businesses and industry trends that were marketed to libraries and colleges when she was 18 and 19 years old. Bios are important! They communicate what you're about to the media, as well as to fans and potential fans of your project. E-mail Joan for info.

Press releases are important, too! Whether on their own or as part of a larger campaign, Riot Act can craft a release that fits your needs, and can distribute it in a timely manner to our ever-growing list of industry contacts. E-mail Joan to discuss this as well!

Everyone at Riot Act has been around long enough to see bands through almost every phase of their career, and everyone at Riot Act has taken unique paths (as we all do) to arrive at their current career position. Everyone at Riot Act also started out having no idea what they were doing, because everyone starts out having no idea what they are doing. It is the nature of life and learning. Do you have a band and aren't sure how to achieve your goals? Do you want to know what a booking agent is and how to go about trying to get one? Do you need clarification on what an average marketing campaign for an album is comprised of? Do you want to be a publicist or work at a label or get into music writing? We can help. Contact Joan, and she'll tell you more.

Do you have an upcoming book with ties to the music, film, arts or humor worlds? We can help! See our "contact/FAQ" page for more information.

Riot Act Media can help develop the right campaign to grow your film or video project's visibility from a grassroots level. If what you do has a connection to the music/arts world, all the better! See our "contact/FAQ" page for more information.

If your non-profit organization needs some help getting the word out about your mission, festival or event, let us know! Check out our "roster" page to see who we've worked with, and see our "contact/FAQ" page for more info.

Are you tired of working with publicists and promotional material writers who come strictly from a corporate background? Does your company need to project an image that reflects what its mission, culture and products are really indicative of, rather than just putting out a vibe that is formal and "safe"? We might be the right folks for you. Whether you're looking for help with product and website launch campaigns or assistance perfecting content, Riot Act can add that fresh edge you may be seeking. Contact Joan for more info.
