Mad Denizen is the stripped-down acoustic project of Oakland-based performer and songwriter Michael Charles. Michael picked up the guitar as a kid and began creating music on a 4-track cassette recorder, using any instrument he could get his hands on. Having grown up on punk rock, he has always embraced the DIY ethic, and continues to record and produce his own music. For his debut LP ‘STARVED’, Michael painstakingly recorded everything on a vintage Tascam 388 reel-to-reel tape machine, in order to capture each song as an authentic performance. STARVED is an unflinching look at the struggle to survive the increasingly treacherous landscape of American Life. Haunting lyrics are laid bare against stark arrangements for steel string guitar and voice, conjuring a dark and beautiful atmosphere.
Mad Denizen’s debut LP ‘STARVED’ will be self-released on Broken Ear Records on May 19th.
“I’ve always loved loud, heavy music. I love the intensity, the power of it. But for this project I wanted to flip that all on its head and see how powerful a statement I could make with a whisper.”
“Discovering the debut LP from Mad Denizen, Starved, is kinda like putting on Springsteen’s Nebraska for the first time. It’s one of those records that encourages late-night listening, preferably with cigarettes smoldering in the ashtray, whiskey close at hand.” – Performer Magazine
