At/All

Sun Dog is the debut LP from Melbourne trio At/All, nine tracks of limber, sun-skewed electronic pop that began life as a collaboration between old friends Pascal Babare and Matt Nicholson. Babare and Nicholson first began making music together in the leafy suburbs of Melbourne around the turn of the century. The early sounds landed somewhere between NZ-inspired jangle-pop and warm noise; as they each grew into their own solo projects – both hard to classify clutches of experimental pop – they kept writing parts on each other’s records, in tiny Japanese bedrooms and Polish villages. Meanwhile, drifting between Melbourne and Berlin, classically trained Lucy Roleff – the multi-instrumentalist daughter of a German opera singer – was developing her own style of intricate, literary folk songs.

At/All is Babare and Nicholson’s first project as a production duo, and their first collaboration with Roleff, who co-wrote half the tracks, and whose nimble, velvet voice adorns the LP. Sun Dog is warm, subtle and ecstatic electro-pop, a record that hums with a magic hour radiance. From the languorous, shimmering “Jingle Baba”, to the otherworldly anthem “Night Body”, Sun Dog is both hazy and bright, a record of quiet and of release, a many sided thing that rewards repeat listens.
